Former QUEENSRŸCHE Guitarist On His Departure: 'A Band Shouldn't Ignore Its Past'

July 4, 2003

Former QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist Kelly Gray has spoken out about his departure from the group, insisting that he had a "completely different view" on the band's future from the other members of the Seattle-based act and claiming that his production work prevented him from taking part in the early recording sessions for QUEENSRŸCHE's new album, "Tribe".

Speaking to the Dutch magazine Aardschok for its June edition, Gray said, "I don't want to say too much about [my split with QUEENSRŸCHE], because I'm still in a band with [drummer] Scott Rockenfield. But in my opinion a band shouldn't ignore its past. If you know that your fans have been waiting for years for a second 'Operation: Mindcrime', then you just can't ignore that. It was clear that for this reason we had a complete different view on QUEENSRŸCHE's future. So there was no reason to continue making music together after this.

"Because of my production work, I wasn't available at the time they were recording the new album ['Tribe'], but also no efforts were made to match our schedules," he added. "Also the temporarily return of Chris [DeGarmo] could do the band a lot of good. But as I've said before: I'm currently busy with some production work, so I'm never bored."

In other news, QUEENSRŸCHE performed with DREAM THEATER and FATES WARNING at Pompano Beach Amphitheater in Pompano Beach, Florida on Saturday, June 28. Check out pictures from LFI.
